EXHAUSTION
EXHAUSTION

With exhaustion and grumpiness, I quickly flip my pillow and pull the covers over my head, knowing what the “Spring Forward” week after the dreaded time change feels like. Losing an hour of sleep makes me want to avoid facing the demands already trying to dig their way under the cocoon I was building.

Yep, our 6-year-old Boxador, Kona, is strongly voicing her opinion of my current choice of denial and ignoring her. So instead, I choose cozy over her immediate early morning needs.

She does not seem to mind that my brain is feeling jet lagged, not the kind where I am returning home from relaxing in tropical place under an umbrella with my feet in the sand but on the contrary.

I lay still, wondering and hoping no one will notice if the school nurse, wife, mama, puppy Glamma, and the writer does not show up. However, Kona’s antics give an obvious reply. She notices.

I am resisting it with a slight bitterness, knowing the long list of tasks await. Finally, however, I roll my whiney hiney out of bed to face what does not keep.

Unfortunately, life is aware of our creative attempts to disappear. However, there is no denying having to adult. Sigh.

Therefore, in times when disruption leads to exhaustion and grumpiness, how does one function effectively with little misery?

1.) GIVE YOURSELF A SPACE OF GRACE DURING TIMES OF EXHAUSTION

1.) GIVE GRACE YOURSELF A SPACE OF GRACE DURING TIMES OF EXHAUSTION

Times of swift change throw us into an unsettling place spiritually, mentally, and physically.

Also, frustration over what we cannot change or how we react to the interruption produces guilt about what we “should” be doing.

Even then, an overworked body and mind lead to thoughts that cannot be trusted. The wrestling match in our mind must be put in time out while we turn over the hourglass of grace timer.

REST FOR EXHAUSTION

2.) GIVE YOURSELF THE GIFT OF REST DURING TIMES OF EXHAUSTION

Giving ourselves the gift of rest and time to take a breath is biblical. Choosing to step away from an area in our lives that is a bit extra is okay.

We aren’t quitters when we push the pause button. Instead, we are patterning our life from Jesus’ example.

Jesus stepped away from the crowd to:

Recharge (Mark 6:30-32),
Work through grief (Matthew 14:1-13),
During a time of mental suffering (Luke 22:39-44),
Before making a vital decision (Luke 6:12-13),
Prepare for an important task (Luke 4:1-2, 14-15)
Pray (Luke 5:16)

Recently, exercise is a regular part of my daily routine. It is beneficial, and most of the time, it’s how I manage stress. Last week, I did not.

But instead, by pushing through the swirling thoughts of failure and guilt for not going, I do feel better on the other side of surrendering. Now, I will resume and feel strong enough to do so.

Seriously, the world did not stop because Lindsey Gibson missed a few days at the gym, and the world will not end if you decide to forgo an activity or two. Rest, my friend.

EXHAUSTION; PRAY

3.) MAKING SPACE FOR PRAYER WILL STRENGTHEN YOU DURING TIMES OF EXHAUSTION

During your pause, spend a few quiet moments praying and reading God’s word.

Nothing pressured or formal, but intentional time of inviting the Holy Spirit into your place of weakness.

He brings a balance humanity cannot create or mimic.

Ephesians 3:16 tells us, “That He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with power through His Spirit into the inner man.”

He brings a balance humanity cannot create or mimic.

Breathing in God’s word washes to refresh a weary soul. There is very little to be trusted, but HIS word is alive and brings truth. A place solid enough to place our tired feet and weary souls.
